It’s one of those items for which there is no good answer – writing a “get to know” piece for an internal company newsletter. On the one hand, I could write stuff that everybody knows. BO-RING (Homer Simpson voice required).
Or, I could try to write something funny – but this is risky. What if no one else thinks it’s funny?
Or I could try to write something edgy – ohhhhh this is really risky. These people are my co-workers. My family’s livelihood is somewhat dependant on what they think of me. Who knows what mix of beliefs and values exist.
Caught in this mess, I produced the following:
On living the dream
By Matt Miner
Sometimes I’ll be having a conversation with a relative or friend with whom I have not spoken in a while. “So, what’s new?” they’ll inevitably ask. I rack my brain, digging through recent activities – a trip to Costco, a new piece of furniture for the baby’s room and maybe a different beer with dinner. Worriedly, I consider the similarity of my plans to Will Ferrell’s in Old School: “Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper; maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.” What has become of me? What would Edmund Hillary or Ernest Hemingway think? But even when life doesn’t sound like a lot to tell, I enjoy pretty much everything I’m doing.
I started at Intel in February of 2005 working in FSM Capital Consolidations. I came to TME Finance in July of this year, supporting fab capital equipment selections and providing coverage for our CAS (Component Automation Systems) group. I like the immediacy of the impact of supporting negotiations. Prior to joining Intel, I worked as a project manager for a local law firm. My bachelor’s degree is in finance from Arizona State (2002).
Outside work, I have a wife (Charity) and daughter (Lucy); my son (Joshua) is due at the end of April this year. My family and I live in a central Phoenix home that was constructed in 1949, so of necessity I enjoy home improvement, repairs, and maintenance. I love to camp, fish and hunt, and that makes Arizona a good state for me. My brother Mark and I write a blog at minerbrothers.com.
That’s pretty much it – I’ll let you all back to your appropriate mix of analysis, influence, administration and youtube. Look me up if you’re in town and want to grab a drink, or need a referral to a Phoenix restaurant.
Did I strike the right balance? Who knows. Annual reviews are coming soon, so maybe I’ll get some feedback then.
And in answer to the first question, my reply is of course, Yes.
